Getting ahead of the good questions

The right questions about fairness, equity & privacy.

Anyone evaluating an integrity tool should ask how it handles bias, equity, and privacy. Those are exactly the right questions, and they're our priorities too. So rather than wait to be asked, here's where we stand on each.

Question 01 · Fairness

"Does the software treat every student fairly?"

It's a fair question. Proctorio's technology has been independently audited by BABL AI, a specialist algorithm-auditing firm, for the absence of demographic bias, so it isn't something you have to take on faith. The flagging only assists a human reviewer; it never decides on its own.

Question 02 · Equity

"Will students need fancy gear or fast internet?"

This is a real barrier, and one we've worked to remove. Proctorio runs as a lightweight browser extension, with no software to install and a low bandwidth footprint. It works on the everyday devices PSU's first-generation and working students already have, including Chromebooks and mobile phones. Accessibility was a design priority from the start.

Question 03 · Privacy

"What happens to student data?"

This matters to us as much as it does to you. Proctorio is one of the few end-to-end encrypted proctoring solutions available, so exam data is locked down to the point that not even we can browse it. And privacy isn't all-or-nothing: you choose how much is ever captured (see below).

Right-size the protection

You choose the level, from low stakes to high stakes.

Protection isn't all-or-nothing. Each program picks the level that matches what's on the line, and changes it whenever the assessment calls for something different. Same platform, right-sized.

Low stakes
Light identity and integrity checks. No recording, the gentlest touch.
Moderate
Browser lockdown keeps the work the student's own. Still no recording.
Higher stakes
Add monitoring with human review, scaled to what the exam is worth.
High stakes
Full protection for licensure, board prep, and credential-defining exams.

Where we'd love to help next

Open to every department, and a natural fit for some.

Every department is welcome, and we start by listening to what each one actually needs. The fit is sharpest where programs are online or mostly online, or where a degree leads to a board or licensure exam. Here are the kinds of programs at PSU we'd love to talk with.

Licensing & credentialing programs

Where a credential's value depends on a trusted assessment

School of Public Health

Social Work · Public Health · Health Studies

Significant online growth potential with licensing and credentialing expectations, and increasing hybrid delivery.

Protect the value of professional credentials while expanding access.

School of Nursing

High-stakes assessments and clinical readiness, with workforce shortages creating real enrollment opportunity.

Support growth while maintaining confidence in graduate preparedness.

College of Education

Teacher-prep programs increasingly serve working adults, and online graduate programs keep expanding.

Ensure trusted assessment outcomes for future educators.

High-enrollment online & graduate programs

Large online cohorts and exam-based assessment

College of Liberal Arts & Sciences

Psychology · Criminology · Political Science · Sociology

Large online enrollments, heavy use of written and exam-based assessment, and strong graduate-program potential.

Keep large online courses credible as enrollments grow.

Graduate School Programs

Professional master's programs are often growth engines, online expansion is common, and credential value is critical.

Protect the credibility of PSU graduate credentials.

Workforce & professional credentials

Certificates and training employers need to trust

Continuing Education & Professional Development

Certificate programs, workforce training, and industry partnerships, a growing area for PSU where the credential has to mean something to employers.

Create trusted workforce credentials that employers value.

An institution-wide option

One consistent standard, rather than department-by-department

Central / institution-wide

Rather than working department-by-department, PSU could set a single learning-integrity standard across the institution, in partnership with the Provost's Office, Academic Affairs, Online Learning, Educational Technology, IT, and Assessment & Accreditation leaders.

One consistent, privacy-focused, equitable standard that scales as PSU grows.

Tied to PSU's own goals

How this supports PSU's plan.

PSU's path forward is doing more with less while growing the programs that serve the region. Proctorio supports both, without asking the university to compromise on access or its mission.

Reduce cost

No software to install, few support tickets, and a browser-based rollout keep administrative overhead low, in line with the operational simplicity PSU is working toward. And because Proctorio is in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace, PSU can redirect committed Azure (MACC) dollars it might otherwise spend on lower-priority tools toward an integrity platform it actually needs.

Support sustainable growth

Online and credential programs are only as valuable as the trust behind them. By helping keep that signal credible, Proctorio supports the programs PSU is building and makes them easier to grow and stand behind.

Microsoft Azure Marketplace

Already committed Azure dollars? Spend them on something that helps.

Many institutions have committed Microsoft Azure spend they don't fully use, and end up buying lower-priority tools just to draw the commitment down. Because Proctorio is in the Azure Marketplace, PSU can point those Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment (MACC) dollars at an integrity platform it actually wants, turning spend that might otherwise be wasted into real value, with simpler procurement and full implementation support from our team.
